Dialogue is a big part of many genres in gaming, being able to talk to characters and understand what they are saying can be a big help when trying to figure out where to go next. However, some titles step away from the usual languages of actual people to make their own toimprove the world-buildingof many titles.

This has been not only written in Japanese but also in English to allow more players to understand and decipher it. Although it may be simple for the player to decipher in-game it is suggested to be a much more complex language as characters require books just to decipher one letter.

Similar to Al Bhed, Hylian is rarely heard spoken by the characters inThe Legend of Zeldaand is instead found across different scriptures and monuments throughout the franchise. It is another language that players have deciphered so that they can also understand the lore further.

Anotherinteresting aspect of Hylianis how it has evolved across games similar to how actual languages have in history. The language builds off of its old words, some sounding similar while others have transformed into new letters making each game an intriguing and almost educational journey.

In this emotional adventure of two brothers language is one thing that players are less likely to notice.Brothers: A Tale of Two Sonsdoesn’t play out in English but instead uses a made-up language that takes heavy inspiration from the game director’s Lebanese heritage though this doesn’t ruin the emotion of this narrative.

It helps incredibly with world-building as elves, especially thenomadic tribes known as the Dalishwill rely on their elven to talk between themselves.

It also helps to signify the different cultures within the games as well as being an exciting skill for players to pick up when they begin to understand certain phrases their companions mutter.

6World Of Warcraft – Race Languages

Similar toDragon Age,World of Warcrafthas its fair share of fantasy races that players can either meet or play as themselves. Like any long-running RPG, this means that over time each race has developed its own language that has been written in-game or spoken at some point.

There is also lore behind these different languages such as the creation of Gutterspeak to influence the idea that discussion between Forsaken and Alliance players should be seen as insulting and unheard of. Eventually, certain language barriers were lifted between races as more were introduced.

The fast-paced speech of the character inAnimal Crossingis not only adorable but also a language many players can remember from the very start of the franchise to its most recent releases. The only difference between how it is spoken is the pitch in which the animal talks, this has made for some very high-pitched conversations at times with certain neighbors having their own unique voices.

4Starcraft – Khalani

An interesting language that to the common ear sounds like meaningless sounds, it’s the telepathic communication used by Khalai and Nerazim inStarcraft. Although they commonly converse through telepathy, Khalani can also be written as a glyph-based language though this is something that other species may still not understand.

Exploring the universe has its troubles, be it the dangers of an inhabitable planet through toxins, dangerous wildlife, or a lack of resources. But one of the biggest hurdles is being unable to understand the languages of the aliens a player meets.

Learning the different languages is something players will gradually do as they explore, asking aliens for aid in learning their tongue or finding stones that will teach them. This can make communication so much easier as players begin to understand what the other species are asking them instead of guessing from their gestures.

By far one of the most popular languages to ever be made in gaming history. Simlish has gone well beyond what many other made-up languages have done by getting artists to make Simlish covers of their songs to better fit into theSim’sworld.

Gibberish can surprisinglypack a lot of personalitywhen it comes to controlling these little people’s lives as players watch their sims interact with others having fully-fledged conversations in a tongue they don’t quite understand. That hasn’t stopped many from mimicking the greeting though.
