Faye is already passed away and cremated at the beginning of the game, but she remains an important character mentioned throughoutGod of War. She is Kratos' second wife and the mother of Atreus. Faye lived as a mortal, but she was a Giant of Jotunheim who kept her true nature hidden from her family, for unknown reasons.
While Faye is never seen in-person inGod of War, it is clear that she adored her son and taught him everything she could before passing away, raising Atreus to be a gentle soul. She also appeared to be a close and loving wife to Kratos, as Kratos wondered if he could raise Atreus without her. He reprimanded Atreus whenever he spoke ill of his mother, expressing anger when Atreus accused him of not mourning Faye.

Laufey the Great Giant Heroine
Her real name was Laufey, and she was renowned as a great giant heroine, known as “Laufey the Just” for her deeds in helping the weak and helpless, and opposing the cruel Aesir and their king Odin, according toMimir. She was also a fearsome and respectful warrior in her own right, drawing the attention of Thor, one of the most powerful Aesir. Even her future husband, Kratos, admired her fighting abilities, describing her as “beautiful.” At some point, she helped Tyr hide the Realm Tower in Jotunheim, cutting her off from her home in order to protect her kin from Thor’s genocide.
After foreseeing her son’s journey, Faye met Kratos, her future husband. They fought briefly but stopped because they shared world-weariness, and they soon got to know each other and eventually fell in love. 10 years later, they built a house in the Wildwoods, and Kratos tells his wife about his past and hides theBlades of Chaosin the basement, unable to get rid of them. Kratos decided to listen to Faye’s stories when she mentioned the Aesir Gods. Faye even learned about her husband’s true nature as a god, as well as his tragic and complicated past, and kept it a secret from their son.

After 22 years, Faye gives birth to a son named Atreus, despite her initial desire to call him Loki. Faye raised the boy primarily, teaching him to hunt and read the Nordic language, among other things. Every day, Faye would teach her son about the various languages spoken throughout the Nine Realms, or at least the ones she was familiar with, as well as archery. She was also the one who fashioned Atreus' bow. In addition, she would educate him on the gods and the various creatures of the Norse wilds.
She instructed Kratos and Atreus to cremate her body and scatter her ashes atop the highest peak of the Nine Realms before she died. Unbeknownst to them, the highest peak was not in Midgard, but in Jotunheim. A mural depicting her life and a prophecy about Atreus, referred to as Loki, could be found and would reveal her origins. She also instructed Kratos to cut down specific trees marked with a golden, glowing hand sign, which would disable the protection around her woods and alert the Gods to her presence in Midgard. Odin sentBaldurto track her down and find her, unaware that she had already died, driving her husband and son to Jotunheim to learn the truth as they bonded on their journey.
When the pair finally arrives in Jotunheim, they discover a mural depicting all of the previous events in their journey, beginning with Faye arguing with her kin. Next, Kratos and Atreus find that Faye was a Frost Giant, after learning that she had predicted everything before she died and that she was not a mortal. After her ashes are scattered, the pair returns toMidgard. Brok and Sindri reveal that they knew Atreus was part-Frost Giant because of Faye, leading Mimir to conclude that it was none other than Laufey the Just, whom he never had the pleasure of meeting, but wishes he had.
Laufey’s Caring Personality and Powers
Both Kratos andAtreushave stated that Faye has always wanted to help those in need, even if there was no personal gain from the action. Atreus had clearly learned and inherited Faye’s kind nature and desire to help others. While Kratos prefers to stay out of other people’s business, Faye is always willing to help those in need, which endeared her to the Huldra brothers.
Faye, according to Atreus, shared her husband’s mistrust of Gods, though not without reason. As the last Guardian of the Jotnar, Faye had the opportunity and hope of her fellow Giants to restore balance to the world after Thor’s rampage. Faye, on the other hand, put her faith in her family. Faye foresaw the journey her son and husband would take and left markings to help guide them.
As a renowned Giant warrior, Faye has been hinted at as a mighty being, powerful enough to attract the attention of Thor, the second most powerful of the Aesir gods, andKratos, a former God of War from another land. Her combination of strength, combat prowess, and cunning would make her a formidable foe. She may rank as one of the strongest of the Frost Giants, with enough power to force the high-tier Aesirs to be the ones after her. But, on the other hand, her strength is insufficient to compete with Ymir, Surtr, or Jormungandr.
