WWE 2K22is out in the wild, and many fans were likely worried heading into release. While it was promising many changes, theuniversally-panned reviews ofWWE 2K20likely left a sour taste in many mouths.
Now, it seems that the consensus is pretty simple:WWE 2K22is a good building block for future titles. Sure, everything from character creation to game modes likeWWE 2K22’s MyRise Modecould be improved, but that can be said of any game at any time.

There are rumors thatEA and WWE have been in talks over the game title, but to be fair, this is too strong of a foundation to let go of. Its particular approach is also good for fans of classic games or for fans of WWE who may have tuned out. It doesn’t hit the same heights as games likeHere Comes The Pain, Smackdown vs. Raw,orSmackdown! Shut Your Mouth, but it is in the same circle as them. For older fans, the Showcase Mode is pure nostalgia too.
WWE 2K22 Showcase Mode: Past to Present Rey Mysterio
If there’s one thing that could be asked ofWWE 2K22’s Showcase Mode, it’s perhaps that more matches and more thorough storylines are included. But there’s no doubt that plaything through Rey’s matches against Eddie Guerrero, JBL, Batista, and so on is pure nostalgia for fans of this era of WWE. Having Rey Mysterio comment on the matches as well is an added bonus for those looking to relive the classic days, whether they currently watch or not.
On top of that, it’s a great way for nostalgic fans returning forRey Mysterio inWWE 2K22to see where he’s come today. If they’re not actively watching WWE, then they may not know about the rivalry matches against Seth Rollins and Murphy, his son Dominik Mysterio’s involvement in that and overall debut, and their tag team.
Really, for nostalgia fans, it’s an amazing journey to see again for Rey Mysterio but also his family. Many may recall that part of his “feud” with Eddie Guerrero was over Dominik, and to see parts of his storyline from then through now really captures that nostalgia—but emotion too. It’s hard not to tear up hearing Rey talk about his matches against Eddie, as well as Eddie’s passing. Indeed, the thing about WWE games are that they are Sports Entertainment, andWWE 2K22’s Showcase Modeshows that its “entertainment” isn’t just big talk and bigger moves but the payoff and remembrance of an emotional investment.
WWE 2K22is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
