A lot of people may be wondering whatZack Snydermight be up to right now and a newYouTubeexclusive from Netflix at least answers the question of what he did after the release ofZack Snyder’s Justice LeagueandArmy of the Dead. In the 4-partSnyder School, fans will get insight straight from the man himself on just what makes his movies so unique.
With the severe movie drought that struck the film industry throughout most of 2020, Snyder’s name gained prominence thanks to a couple of previously dormant projects he had up his sleeve. After WarnerMedia decided to resurrect the SnyderVerse to benefit HBO Max, Netflix alsocame out swinging withArmy of the Dead, which they acquired in 2019 to keep the director occupied during that year, after he penned the script for it all the way back in 2007.

WhileArmy of the Deadreviewshave not seen the film stay free from criticism, the film certainly stands out from most zombie movies by incorporating heist elements and a unique intro sequence that is the focal point of the first episode of theSnyder School. In the 13-minute breakdown, Snyder goes through his thought process for crafting a proper opening scene, including his transition from analog to digital, what app he uses for sketching, how something as trivial as a font helps set the tone, and why he couldn’t pass on using a good Liberace impersonator.
For those captured by the first episode, the other three parts of theSnyder Schoolwill be releasing on May 27, and June 1 and 7, covering other filmmaking aspects such as lighting, camera work, actions sequences, hot to tackle the editing process, and world-building within the scope of each film. Regardless of how one feels about Snyder, the Netflix Film Club content is an absolute treat for anyone that’s interested in creative work.
Most importantly, Snyder talks about how his past films have also benefited from this approach, mentioningDawn of the Dead,300andWatchmen, although surprisingly leaving out his work with the DCEU. Even if this most likely due to licensing, it’s unavoidable to pick apartSnyder’s Justice Leagueto single out these exact same elements and how that alone sets a very different tone from what Whedon tried to do as part ofthe studio’s efforts to imitate the Marvel formula.
Withthe SnyderVerse almost out of the questionfor the remaining future of the DCEU, it won’t take long until someone else hands Snyder another big project to carry out his vision, even if the Wisconsin nativedoesn’t get to make his Vince Lombardi movie.
